Lisa Loeb Interview

PPND-First off, thanks for taking time to take part in this interview with PPND.

If you had to describe your music to someone who has not heard it before, what would you say it was like?

Lisa- Singer songwriter with a band.  Lyric oriented songs.

PPND- You recently released your seventh studio album entitled “No Fairy Tale”.  It’s a bit different from some of your previous work.  I feel that you could gain a whole new audience with it as well as satisfy your old fans.  How would you describe it?

Lisa- It's more in the pop/punk/rock vein than just a singer songwriter with a band who rocks sometimes. This album is still centered in the songs, but it's more energetic and punchy.

PPND- You co-produced it with New Found Glory’s Chad Gilbert.  How was it working with him?

Lisa- It was awesome working with Chad. He and I had a great thing going- we were able to work quickly to get the performances we liked and put together arrangements with the band.  He had a lot of things worked out in his head too, and had some great direction for me vocally.

PPND- There are a few guest collaborations on this record, how did Tegan and Sara, and Hello Goodbye get involved with the project and what did they bring to the table?

Lisa- Chad toured with them and brought them to the project.  Those guys brought a different point of view in the song writing that worked well with the rest of the album to round out the album and some unique playing and singing too!

PPND- You have recently performed on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno as well as Conan.  What was that like?  Any interesting stories?

Lisa Loeb- I love playing with my band, so I was really proud to play with them on Television and Chad Gilbert also joined us on those shows.  I loved playing my lucite flying V, an anniversary present from my husband, on Conan!  I also loved seeing Leno and Piers Morgan on the side of the stage bobbing their heads to the "No Fairy Tale" performance.
PPND- You have a string of shows coming up in March.  Can you give some details on them?

Lisa- I'll play with my band Nine Stories, and we'll do a lot of older songs, including "Stay ( I missed you)" as well as introducing folks to the new songs.  I always take a little break from the band too to play some requests from the audience.

PPND- What are you looking forward to on the upcoming tour?

Lisa- I'm looking forward to playing with the band!  It's my first band tour in awhile.  I've been doing more acoustic solo or duo tours over the last few years as well as children's concerts, so this will be fun.  Plus, I get to play electric guitar too!

PPND- The last time I saw you perform was September of 2004 at The El Mocambo in Toronto.  Any future plans on returning to Canada?

Lisa- I'd love to come to Canada!  We have to book a tour there.

PPND- What’s the weirdest/craziest thing that has ever happened on tour or at a show?  I’m sure you have encountered some seriously bizarre things over the years.

Lisa- There was one show back in the day where some slam dancing erupted.  That's a strange sight at one of my shows!

PPND- If you could narrow it down, what would be some of your most rewarding moments as an artist?

Lisa- I love meeting some of my music heroes, like Elton John, David Bowie, Olivia Newton John, and more.  I also loved collaborating with some of my favorites on a songwriting trip to Cuba, like Burt Bachrach.  I also love concerts like one I played in Madison Square Garden where I was up there playing with my acoustic guitar and the entire audience was singing along.  I also love people telling me their stories about how my music helped them in certain situations.

PPND- What can your fans expect from you in 2013?

Lisa- I'll be on tour, hopefully in many cities, and also I have an illustrated book with a cd for kids (the second in the series) Lisa Loeb's Songs for Movin' and Shakin': The Air Band Song and Other Toe-Tapping Tunes coming out in April

PPND- Thanks again for taking the time to answer some questions.  Any final comments?

Lisa- Buy the record and come see me in concert or sometime on-line for a concert! and follow me on Twitter and let me know what you think. @LisaLoeb
