The Story So Far Interview

I recently interviewed Will from The Story So Far.

PPND- When I first heard The Story So Far back in 2008, I thought you guys were okay but that you sounded too familar to stand out amongst the pop punk scene. But recently you guys have come into your own and have crafted such a raw, emotional and authentic sound that that puts you ahead of most pop punk bands. What has changed for you guys since 2008?

TSSF- We've grown up, played more shows, finished high school, done a few years in college, moved away from home, moved backed home from college, made new friends, listened to more music, watched new movies, been to new places, a lot. we were all in high school when it was written and now we're all out of high school. we all grow as people as time goes on, but it's gone by very quickly for me.

PPND- I love your debut album "Under Soil And Dirt". It has this feeling of teenage angst that reminds me of the first time I heard "Tell All Your Friends" and "Through Being Cool" How has the response been so far?

TSSF- Tight! The response has been amazing, something we never thought could happen. We've been very humbled by this, it's great to have our music out there with bands that we look up to and listen to. we are very proud of it. it's great to understand what it really takes to make a full length, and have something that people are listening to repeatedly is great.

PPND- How did the new record come together? What were some of the challenges you faced?

TSSF- Kevin, Ryan and myself(will), lived at home in Walnut Creek and would jam at ryans house about once or twice a week from august-april, jamming, coming together with parts, demoing. With the demos, we would send them off to parker and kelen and they would add their parts. The distance between us was very difficult. When we went into Panda, we had no idea what Kelen or Parker had written, everything was a surprise for us. It was a treat most of the time.

PPND- How did you get involved with Pure Noise Records?

TSSF- Years ago I gave Jake the demo we had in 2008, I wasn't in the band and Kevin Ambrose was still playing, and Jake said he was starting a label and was interested in putting out some music. Jake and I became friends by seeing each other at shows and he eventually put out While You Were Sleeping and we've been so happy with the relationship we have made with him. He works incredibly hard for his bands.

PPND- How's the pop punk scene in Walnut Creek, California.

TSSF- There really isn't much in Walnut Creek that we know of. We play mostly out of our area, there's one local venue and it's cool. Luckily we're close to San Francisco and Berkeley that have venues like Thee Parkside, 924 Gilman St, Bottom of the Hill, so we can venture off to those areas to go to shows.

PPND- What is your favourite place to play live?

TSSF- I love Branch Street in Sacramento, it's a party house, Scott is a cool dude, and the more times we play there, the more kids show up each show, it's so fun.

PPND- You're currently on tour with pop punk heavyweights Handguns, We Are The Union and I Call Fives. How has it been so far?

TSSF- We haven't met up with them just yet, we played a string of shows in the Northwest and we're home, actually in my backyard. Our first show with them is in a few days in Santa Cruz. I can tell you that we are all excited as fuck to play and get out of town and see our country!

PPND- What's the wierdest thing that has ever happened while on tour or at a show?

TSSF- The weirdest thing is that the town of Allyn, Washington hates TSSF. Last November we were scheduled to play a house show there with This Time Next Year. We drove through snow to get to it, and TTNY stayed at a friends house in Seattle. We were about an hour from getting snowed in when we decided to try and leave. We drove through about 30 miles of ice roads during a blizzard which took about 4 hours. Got to Tacoma to sleep at a friends place for the night. The show was cancelled and we all got home safely, somehow. We just went back to the same house last week to play a show with Second To Last. We set up our gear and hang out for an hour, we realize there is no P.A. cool, an hour later the P.A. shows up with no microphones, cool. Another hour passes by and some microphones show up and they don't work. We tore down our gear tried to leave, but the trailer hitch grinded on the drive way and shredded our cables that are connected to the trailer lights. cool. Homie fixed the wires and we drove 18 hours in the rain to get home. Allyn, Washington does not like us.

PPND- Soon you'll be touring Japan, how did that come together?

TSSF- Our boy Mizuki from Ice Grill$ Records said once we had a full-length out he would get us a Japan tour. I've been wanting to see this country for awhile now. So we're all freaking out about it.

PPND- Do you have any plans on playing Canada anytime soon?

TSSF- We are trying to work some dates, not really sure how soon it will be, but we want to see Canada!

PPND- I think The Story So Far are going to be one of the most talked about Pop Punk bands in 2011. What can your fans expect for the rest of the year.

TSSF- We're going to play a lot of shows, have a lot of fun, and more writing and playing music.

PPND- Thanks for doing this interview. Any final comments for your fans?

TSSF- Thank you Chris for the interview and thanks to anybody who has listening to our band, supported us or even thought about our band, that's cool.

Either/Or and More Vol. 3
