Basement- Covet

Limits and Lines Interview (California Indie/Emo)

I recently had the chance to interview Ryan Knowles from Limits and Lines.

PPND-First off, state your name and role in Limits and Lines.

Ryan- Hey, I'm Ryan Knowles, and I am one of the primary song-writers in the band, but I play lead guitar (all the weird stuff) and do some backing vocals as well.

PPND- How would you describe your music to someone who has never heard it?

Ryan- I would ask someone what they like, and tell them that we sound like whatever the said. But really, I would say we have taken a new twist on conventional indie rock and mixed it with lots of influence from 90's Midwestern Emo bands as well as many current pop punk bands, and skramz (screamo) on my side.

PPND- What’s the Emo and Pop Punk scenes like in San Diego?

Ryan- Pretty non existent to tell you the truth. The struggle to stay alive has been something that has been a problem since we started because of an overpopulation of metal core bands. There are some Emo bands in around like our close friends in Throne and Good Grief, and some pop punk bands like Black Panther and Headway and you can check out all 4 of them on Facebook. Right now, the music scene needs to really unite and be supportive of each other. There are too many kids in and out of bands that say support local music but won't go to a show unless their friend is playing. It is sad actually.

PPND- I loved your debut “Winter EP”, that you released last year. How did those songs, and that EP come together?

Ryan-Thanks, that means a lot. Well, Freddy had hit me up on Facebook about jamming. He came over to my house and taught my Quarterlife and A Year Ago, and I wrote some piano parts to it because I originally was going to play keys. I asked him what he thought and he said,"Yeah." Haha. We began to jam more, and I was really into Title Fight at the time and was trying to figure out the cool harmonic they played at the end of Memorial Field which thy tuned their B string to a C, and I left my guitar in that tuning and we accidentally made Through the Wind. Almost Home we wrote the practice before recording and we just kinda did it because we were bored.

PPND- You recently went in the studio to record your sophomore EP with Matt Fitzpatrick from My Iron Lung. What was the recording process like?

Ryan- Matt is such an amazing guy. Honestly. He really cares about music from charging basically nothing to starting a whole group on Facebook for DIY Touring. We spent about 5 days total up recording. I'm really proud of these songs. It is a lot different from our last release. But I wouldn't except us to do anything like it again anytime soon. I'm really excited to get these songs out. We spent many hours getting everything perfect, and it is a piece of art in my mid.

PPND-I'm stoked to hear it. Any upcoming tours or shows planned?

Ryan- I'm stoked to hear it as well. Haha. We are going to plan a record release show as soon as we get the final mixes and know when we can get in tapes and 7". I am currently looking into a 2 week tour this winter going up north a bit and out to Texas as well.

PPND- Sweet, any plans on ever playing up here in Canada (Toronto).

Ryan- Hell yeah man! I want to go everywhere and anywhere. Expect some shows in Tecate before, but I would love to go to Canada to tour someday. I hear it is a beautiful country.

PPND- Yea it is, and there's a lot of great up and coming bands in the scene right now.

Ryan- I'm not too familiar with any bands up there besides Redrick Sultan who are insane!

PPND- What has been your favourite show that you’ve played thus far as a band?

Ryan- My favorite show by far was the Frubble Forever Fest. There was this very small boba smoothie shop down the street from my house called Frubble, and the owner Mark opened his doors and space as an all ages music space. Recently this place closed down and we played the final show which was my favorite. It was a 12 hour show that I put together in a week with help from my close friend George. We didn't play the best, but it was the most fun I've ever had in this band by a long shot.

PPND- Sounds like a fun show, and a great venue.

Ryan- Yeah. It was really a sad thing that it closed down. RIP Frubble. We actually made a music video for our song Through the Wind as a tribute video to the place. You can check it out on the Facebook page. I'm sure we posted it somewhere.

PPND- A lot of the best shows in Toronto are 19+, it's important to have a cool all ages venues like that.

Ryan- We are really lacking all ages spaces around here right now. Especially in East Country where I'm from. I understand the importance a lot considering I just turned 18 today.

PPND- Happy birthday! You just made me feel really freakin old.

Ryan- I tend to do that. A lot of people think I'm way older. Freddy is 24 and our new drummer Will is 20 I believe.

PPND- What was the first show you ever attended?

Ryan- I think the first show I ever want to was this band called The Material at SOMA side stage. I really looked up to their guitar player since he was doing what I wanted and was vegan. Recently we played with them actually which was a trip.

PPND- Very cool. I think it’s about time to wrap this interview up. Thanks again for taking some time out on your birthday to answer some questions. Any final comments for your fans?

Ryan- I would just say thanks to the support and thank you Chris at PPND. Thank you Matt from My Iron Lung, thanks to Mark and Caroline from Frubble, Greg from the Che Cafe, anyone else supporting this scene. Cat Council and Boss Party represent. Shoutout to Throne, Sledding With Tigers, Good Grief, Kids., Black Panther, Blake Cox-Murphy and Headway, also to all the bands we have played with. Stay in tune and keep posted we will have orders for the new EP up soon. Thank you again for this. Also huge Shoutout to our boys in Head Injuries from Colorado. Get buck. They are playing with the Descendents soon so check them out! True pop punk at it's finest.
